This blue surface-mount LED measures 1.5 mm. When turned on, an LED is a semiconductor light source with two leads that emits light. The electrons in the device can recombine with the electron holes when the proper voltage is provided to the LED terminal, releasing energy in the form of photons. We call this phenomenon electroluminescence. The semiconductor’s energy bandgap dictates the colour of the LED.
